In writing this article, we benefited from the insights and feedback of Dr. Glenn Fleisig, research director of ASMI (the American Sports Medicine Institute). With its mission “to improve the understanding, prevention, and treatment of sports-related injuries through research and education,” ASMI finds more than a little of its attention devoted to pitching, where injuries requiring elbow and shoulder surgeries show no sign of abating.
